My hearing works just fine.” Are you a parent that has used that one on your kids? I’m not sure at what age they realize that the volume of their voice doesn’t correlate to the likelihood of receiving a favorable reply —it might be sometime in the teenage years, when the talking slows down altogether. But I’ve got to admit, it would be nice if God always gave us a loud and dramatic sign when He wanted something —the booming voice and the torn-open heavens (“This is my beloved Son!”) re-ally get the message across. Sometimes I find my-self envious of the Apostles, who were able to witness such things in person. The fact of the matter is, in the year 2021, God is more likely to speak in a whisper than in a shout. The prophet Isaiah forewarns that Christ himself will not be a noisemaker —for all his preaching, he will not cry out or shout to bring forth justice to the nations. His way is altogether different than that.We are not the Apostles, and we do not have the privilege of seeing the Holy Spirit descend on Christ like a dove. But here’s the good news: God doesn’t need to shout. Our spiritual hearing works just fine. We just have to be listening.Let’s wake up each morning ready to hear God’s whispers throughout the day. Let’s make a conscious effort to invite those whispers into our hearts, where they can become a catalyst for grace in this world.—Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Bishop Anthony B. Taylor issued the following statement Nov. 11, 2020, about the Vatican’s report on Theodore McCarrick, the former cardinal in Washington, D.C. "I am grateful to Pope Francis for his commitment to bringing healing to the victims of clergy sexual abuse and to preventing such cases from being mishandled in the future, regardless of the prominence of the accused perpetrator. Yesterday we received concrete proof of his commitment to transparency and to bringing the light of truth to bear on this darkest of evils that has, in the case of ex-Cardinal Theodore. There has been no change in the protocols in place for protecting people from the spread of COVID-19 on Church property and at Church functions. All requirements of mask wearing, 6’ physical distancing and hand sanitizing remain in place. With an increased attendance, these requirements should be enforced more strictly than ever, not only at Mass, but also for all other activities on Church property.Above all, no one should be allowed to enter the Church without wearing a mask or be allowed to remain at Mass if they remove their mask once inside. The only exception is during the time when a person serves as lector or cantor or otherwise has a speaking role at Mass, exercised at least 12’ from the rest of the congregation. The Cathedral has hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes in the vestibule and both side doors for your use. Should you forget your mask, please asked an usher and they will be happy to provide you with a disposable mask to wear. Please be kind and respectful to our ushers as they assist us in implementing the requirements to protect us from COVID-19.
The kickoff for the 2020-2021 One Church: Unite Arkansas in Faith and Mission campaign is Sept. 26-27. This year’s partner is St. Bartholomew Church in Little Rock, a predominantly African-American parish started in 1909, that is in need of a new parish life center to house its faith formation activities and serve the neighborhood children through after-school programs. Parishioners have been meeting in the parish's old high school building, which closed in 1964. Major repairs are needed to fix the former school’s cinder-block walls and air conditioning. There is mold, cracks in the walls and the air conditioning is old, noisy and does not work properly.
